What are the main characteristics of Art déco ?
First, I see the influence of cubism on the 1910’s and the 1920’s society and on the decorative arts: furniture, luminaries, sculpture. With Art déco, artistes wished to experiment with a new form of classicism, in response to Art nouveau and its “soft” shapes. Lines are geometric, streamlined and new colours appear such as black and orange.
What makes you like this style?
In our line of work, things rarely happen by chance, it is often a family affair. My mother, also active on the market, is specialised in Art déco. When discovering these aesthetic values and the extreme quality of the craft, it’s impossible not to yield to it! One deals with precious woods like rosewood, amboyna burl, Macassar ebony, with unmatched cabinetmaking and exceptional finishing touches in bronze, silver...
Which piece are you particularly proud of?
A sculpted granite bear by animal artiste Georges Lucien Guyot, that I just purchased. It is a unique, majestic and very strong piece.
J’y vois d’abord l’influence du cubisme sur la société
des années 10-20 et sur les arts décoratifs : le mobilier,
les luminaires, la sculpture. Avec l’Art déco, les artistes
ont voulu expérimenter une nouvelle forme de classicisme, en réaction contre l’Art nouveau et ses formes « molles ». Les lignes sont géométriques, épurées, de nouvelles couleurs apparaissent dans les intérieurs comme le noir et l’orangé.
Qu’est-ce qui vous a fait aimer ce style ?
Dans nos métiers, les choses n’arrivent jamais tout à fait par hasard, c’est souvent une histoire de filiation. Ma mère, également sur le marché, est spécialisée dans l’Art déco. Quand on découvre les valeurs esthétiques et l’extrême qualité de réalisation attachées à ce style, on ne peut que succomber ! On est face à des bois précieux comme le palissandre, la loupe d’Amboine, l’ébène de Macassar, face à un travail d’ébénisterie inégalé et à des finitions exceptionnelles, en bronze, argentées...
De quelle pièce êtes-vous particulièrement fier ?
Un ours en granit, en taille directe, de l’artiste animalier Georges Lucien Guyot, que je viens de rentrer.
C’est une pièce unique, majestueuse et très forte.
