Twenty years ago, the windows of the Biron market still shined with the gild of Napoléon III and XIXth century merchandise, much prized by the Middle-Eastern clientele. Today, all styles starting from the XVIIIth century are represented, and clients have become more diversified and widely international. Arnaud Catel, antiquarian of the market and member of the board, likes to see this regrouping of specialists as the pendant of the Louvre des Antiquaires, in Paris, a luxury market in its waning phase. “We do not follow trends and we are highly particular with the choice of our antiquities, which are destined to connoisseurs”, he insists.
Stepping into the market’s entrance into aisle1, one discovers a series
of windows offering an array of ancient furniture, Art déco chandeliers, precious silver and gold work, rococo curios and rare paintings which would not look out of place in a museum.
New clients, Russians and Chinese, are enjoying the show! Even if impressed, one should not hesitate to enter these sanctuaries and admire their treasures.
Down the main alley way, aisle 2 invites you on another voyage. Here as well, the choice is eclectic, but the abundance of curios and less formal stores give this market a junk shop spirit, where bargain hunting is back on the menu. And even though it is not the market’s main orientation, contemporary art galleries – some of which can be spotted at the Biennale des antiquaires – have dug their hole and regularly exhibit artist’s works such as, recently, contemporary ceramics. Such diversity makes the visit last longer at the Biron market... Only two aisles, you were saying?

who are specialised art dealers themselves (Japanese and
Far East arts, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, Art nouveau...),

hanging on 85, rue des Rosiers, the Biron market was created in 1925.
At the time, rag dealers and junk shop owners, in a hurry to leave their premises on today’s boulevard des Maréchaux, created an association
in Saint-Ouen and obtained
an agricultural site for rent. Situated between avenue Michelet, the rue des Rosiers and the rue Biron to which
its owes its name, the market soon saw the first hard stalls of the Puces popping up along two aisles in a hair pin shape.
From the beginning, the antiquarians of the Biron market have distinguished themselves with goods referring to art history, such as ancient artefacts and restored pieces. From one generation of dealers to another, the stalls keep on being passed on with

Lui-même antiquaire, Alain Morel est directeur du marché Biron depuis 2015. Avec les membres du conseil d’administration, eux aussi marchands spécialisés (arts du Japon et d’Extrême-Orient, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, Art nouveau et généraliste), il partage la gestion et la promotion du marché, ainsi que le choix des nouveaux arrivants.
